woody plants as was predicted in the original permit application.
Woody plant densities on the 1987 Reclamation Seeding from the 1991
sampling effort resulted in an average of 1.70 woody plants or 0 shrubs per 50
square meters (Table 7, Woody Plant Density for 1987 Seeding). This value
compares with an average of 1.0 woody plants or 0.6 shrubs per 50 square
meters obtained from this site from the 1989 sampling. When the present
vegetative characteristics of this site are compared with those associated with
the 1983 Reclamation Seeding at a similar age, it is obvious that the woody
plant densities on this more recently reclaimed site are higher than those
associated with the older site at a comparable age. The 1987 site yielded 1.70
woody plants per 50 square meters during its fourth growing season while the
1983 site produced only 0.4 woody plants per 50 square meters during its fourth
growing season. These data suggest that the revegetation methods presently
employed at the Southfield Mine are more compatible with the revegetation
standards of woody plant densities than were those associated with 1983
reclamation efforts.
8
