t Tailings Pond No • •
Sunnyside Mine
' Silverton, Colorado
Project No. 3120K114
' Based on the above concerns, we have formulated the following
preliminary recommendations to be made part of the reclamation
' plans:
' 1. The excavation plan for removal of the tailings from the
face of the embankment should be carefully formulated.
' Heavy excavation equipment should be kept off of the crest
of the embankment. If possible a conveyor system should
' be utilized to convey tailing from the working face of the
excavation to the top of the pond. As excavation proceeds
toward the bottom of existing on embankment of the use of
' a "gradall," backhoe or similar equipment, operating at
the toe of the existing embankment is highly recommended.
t Once excavation plans are formulated, we can provide
additional consultation upon request.
^ 2. Provisions should be made for temporary collection of
sloughing materials at the toe of the embankment to
' preclude any sediments from entering Boulder Creek..
Sediment control fencing or a cofferdam constructed of
' compacted tailings is recommended.
' 3. The surface of the pond which will accept placement of the
excavated tailings should be prepared by shaping the
' surface to slope to the rear of the pond. A grade: of 10:1
or flatter is recommended. The exposed subgrade :should be
compacted to a minimum of 95% of Standard Proctor density
' (ASTM D198) at -3 to +1% of optimum moisture content.
' 4. Excavated tailings placed on top of the pond should be
spread in loose lifts on the order of 12 inches iii
thickness. This material should be compacted to ~~ minimum
of 95% of standard proctor density (ASTM D198) at -3 to
' +1% of opt imum moisture content.
' -10-
