' Tailings Pond No• •
Sunnyside Mine
Silverton, Colorado
Project No. 3120K114
' S. Controlled placement of tailings type is highly
recommended. Most of the excavated tailings are expected
' to be the sand fraction, which can be used around the
exterior perimeter of the top of the pond. If slimes are
' encountered during excavation these materials should be
placed toward the interior of the pond, out of structural
' sections, where their low strength will not effect
stability of the reclaimed slope. We recommend that
compacted sand tailings comprise at least the first 100
' feet of the completed structural section on top of the
embankment.
6. Slime tailings, if encountered, are expected to es:ist at
' fairly high water contents. Compaction of this material
is anticipated to be difficult at best. Nonetheless,
efforts should be made to spread this material and. provide
compaction.
' Surface water on the top of the pond should be diverted
from the face of the embankment, preferably toward) the
rear of the existing tailings material. Should diversion
be accomplished by gravity flow, a system of rip-napped
' channels in natural soils beyond the abutment of t:he
tailings and the mountainside is recommended.
' 9. Surface run off flow from the mountainside to the north
should be diverted around the tailings pond. Drainage
' diversion channels upstream of the pond should be included
in the reclamation plans.

' -11-
