Tailings Pond No• •
Sunnyside Mine
' Silverton, Colorado
Project No. 3120K114
' o Intensity of study
o Certainty of the design loading condition occuring
1
Depending on how well the above factors can be assessed
' determines what minimum factor of safety would be required to
have a reasonable degree of confidence that a failure will not
occur. It is the responsibility of the geotechnical engineer
to assess those conditions and provide advice as to a minimum
acceptable factor of safety.
A minimum factor of safety of at least 1.5 is generally the
' minimum assigned to man-made slopes analyzed under static
conditions. A minimum factor of safety of 1.0 is typically
' used under pseudo-static conditions.
Based on the results of our analyses, the factor of safety for
existing slopes do not meet recommended criteria for static
conditions, However, the minimum factors of safety for both
static and psuedo-static cases can be met when constructing the
2:1 slopes planned for the reclamation process.
' RECOMMENDATIONS
Reclamation of the tailings pond will consist of excavating
' materials from the face of the slope with placement at the top
of the existing embankment. To maintain stability during the
reclamation process, the type and method of construction
' operation is considered the most critical. Long-term :stability
will be effected by the control of water entering the tailings
' pond and materials, and the placement of any excess tailings on
top of the existing embankment.
' -9-
1
