Species Composition
• Cover sampling identified four lifeforms and nineteen species within the 1998 reseeded or
interseeded azeas. The lifeforms included nine species of perennial grass, one annual
grass, two perennial, one biennial, and four annual forbs, one succulent, and one shrub.
Of the species encountered on the 1998 reseeded or interseeded areas, fourteen were
native and five were introduced. Perennial and biennial species outnumbered annual
species by fourteen to five. Both warm and cool season species contributed to the
seasonality of the 1998 reseeded or interseeded azeas. Warm season graminoids were
dominant with six of the ten species, while cool season forbs prevailed with six of the
seven forb species. The succulent was evergreen and the shrub species was deciduous.
The 1998 reseeded or interseeded azeas had six species contributing greater than three
percent relative cover this yeaz. The species contributing greater than three percent
relative cover included three perennial grasses, one annual grass, and two annual forbs.
These species included Kochia scoparia (36.31%), Calamovilfa longifolia (27.38%),
Bromus tectorum (9.52%), Andropogon hallii (6.SS%), Agropyron smithii (4.17%), and
Helianthus annuus (3.57%).
QUALITATIVE EVALUATION: 1985,1986,1987,1999, AND 2000
RECLAMATION AREAS
1985 RECLAMATION AREA
• The 1985 reclamation azeas encompass approximately 23 acres of reclaimed pit in the
north central azea of the Keenesburg Mine permit azea. The 1485 reclamation area is
composed of two pazcels (Areas 13 and 22) sepazated by a north-south haul road corridor
(Area 19). This area is nearly flat with a gentle slope (Q°) to the north and east.
Reclamation and coincident revegetation within this area took place in 1985. Replaced
soils were sandy in texture. The revegetation seed mix differed slightly in composition and
representation of cool season grasses from the seed mix applied to the 1986 and 1987
reclaimed areas, yielding a slightly different species composition.
Area 22 was mowed in the spring of 2002 to reduce standing dead litter. Observations of
the parcels during sampling and at the end of the growing season indicated little significant
growth this season. The visually dominant species this year was the warm season grass
Calamovilfa longifolia. Cool season grass growth this season was significantly reduced
due to the lack of spring moisture. Few forb species were observed for the same reason.
While there was little above ground growth this season, the plants appeared healthy,
indicative of good calm and root vigor. Total mean vegetation cover was estimated
between 30 and 35 percent throughout both Areas 13 and 22. Herbaceous production of
this azea was estimated at 75-100 g/m2 (670-890 Ib/ac). There was no evidence of
invasion by unwanted species or evidence of pest or disease problems.
I •
Coors EnergyCompary Page 12
2002 Revegetation Monitoring Report
