• of 0.31 to 1.97 (nonsaline) in the soil layers and 1.19 to 2.75 (nonsaline to slightly saline)
in the third layer down which is usually a mix of reapplied topsoil and regraded spoil.
Soil texture is primarily loam or clay loam but also includes silt loam. Saturation
percents range from 37.4 to 51 and average 44.5 percent. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR)
is all good and ranges from 0.18 to 0.53 (nonsodic). Nitrate nitrogen values aze also all
good and range from <0.02 to 20.6 with an average of 6.6 ppm. All ABP values aze
positive and range from 5.32 to 42.8.
Six backhoe pits were dug on reclaimed lands -three on Yoast Mine reclaimed land
(YTS-OS-P1, YTS-OS-P2, and YTS-OS-P3) and three on 2W Mine reclaimed land
(2WTS-OS-P1, 2WTS-OS-P2, and 2WTS-OS-P3). The pits were dug down through the
reapplied topsoil and into the underlying overburden spoil. The backhoe pits were dug to
about six feet in depth, and caze was taken to provide a straight, clean sidewall and
endwall for observation, description, and sampling purposes.
A soil profile description was completed in the field and samples were taken by horizons
(layers) or depth interval, whichever was most appropriate. Soil profile and landscape
photographs of each pit aze attached. The following profile descriptions were completed
at the time of soil sampling.
toast Mine Reclaimed Land Soi! Pit YTS-OS-PI (toast Pit I)
Sample site YTS-OS-Pl is located on reclaimed land at the toast Mine. Site
• chazacteristics include: reclaimed 6% slope on lower sideslope position; east aspect;
mixed reclamation grasses and fortis, excellent cover and productivity; reapplied topsoil;
well drained; moderate permeability; no erosion at site; sampled September 8, 2005; soil
samples for lab include 0-6" (reapplied topsoil), 6-16" (reapplied topsoil), 16-34" (mix of
reapplied topsoil and weathered overburden spoil), and 34-60" (overburden spoil).
A horizon - 0 to 6 inches; dazk grayish brown (IOYR 4/2) loam to clay loam texture with
15% mixed gravels, very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist; moderate medium
granulaz structure; slightly hazd dry consistence, friable moist consistence, slightly sticky
and slightly plastic wet consistence; many fine and very fine roots, common medium
roots, and few coarse roots; slightly calcazeous, neutral (pH 7.1, from lab data); gradual
wavy boundary.
C1 horizon - 6 to 16 inches; dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) loam to clay loam texture
with 15% mixed gravels, very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist; moderate medium
subangulaz blocky structure; hazd dry consistence, firm moist consistence, slightly sticky
and slightly plastic wet consistence; many fine and very fine roots, common medium
roots, and few coazse roots; slightly calcazeous to noncalazeous, neutral (pH 6.7, from lab
data); gradual wavy boundary.
C2/OB] horizon - 16 to 34 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) loam to sandy clay loam texture
with 20% mixed gravels, brown (lOYR 4/3) moist; horizon is a mixture of reapplied
topsoil and overburden spoil; massive structure; hard dry consistence, firm moist
4
