clay content is also considered unsuitable except with amelioration (Seneca Coal IIW
• Mine, 2002).
3.0 RESULTS
Reapplied Topsoil and Regraded Spoil Laboratory Results:
Two sets of laboratory data aze attached to this report. Set 1 samples were delivered on
August 2 and reported on September 15, 2005. They include 45 regraded spoils sampled
in late July on the 2W Mine. Set 2 samples were delivered on September IS and reported
on October 12, 2005. They include 15 regraded spoils sampled in September on the
Yoast Mine, the 13 samples from the 3 reapplied topsoil backhoe pits on the Yoast Mine,
and the 11 samples from the 3 reapplied topsoil backhoe pits on the 2 W Mine. Data for
an approximate 10 percent rerun aze included with the laboratory results for QA/QC
purposes.
Regraded Spoil Evaluation Results:
All regraded spoil samples collected in 2005 (including the 45 spoil samples collected at
2W in July and the 15 regraded spoil samples collected at Yoast in September) have
"good-rated" suitable quality material with no unsuitable parameters.
Regraded spoil reaction (pH) ranges from pH 6.9 (neutral) to pH 8.3 (moderately
alkaline). The average pH of regraded spoil is 7.5 (slightly alkaline) for the 2W Mine,
and 7.4 (slightly alkaline) for the Yoast Mine. Saturation percents are all "good-rated"
and range from 28.8 to 60.5. Average saturation percent is 40.1 percent for the 2W Mine
and 41.5 percent for the Yoast Mine. Electrical conductivity (EC) values range from 0.39
to 4.75 (nonsaline to moderately saline), with an average EC of 2.62 for the 2 W Mine and
3.61 for the Yoast Mine, both slightly saline.. Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) values
range from 0.22 to 1.43 (nonsodic). Regraded spoil textures are primarily loam and clay
loam but also include silty clay loam, silty clay, and clay. Six samples had clay texture
but only two with greater than 50 percent clay (sample 2W-OS-27 with 52% clay, and
2W-OS-41 with 50% clay). Six samples had silty clay texture but none with greater than
50 percent clay.
Acid-Base Potential (A:B Potential) values aze all positive (greater than, "more positive",
than the threshold suitability value of -5 Tons of CaCO3 per 1000 tons of material).
None of the samples required the second analytical step of pyritic sulfur determination
and recalculation of A:B Potential. Values range from 3.9 to 112 and average 53.4 for
the 2 W Mine and 40.7 for the Yoast Mine.
Reapplied Topsoil (Backhoe Pitsl Evaluation Results:
All reapplied topsoil samples collected from backhoe pits in 2005 have "good-rated"
suitability. Soil reaction (pH) ranges from pH 6.4 (slightly acid) to pH 7.6 (slightly
• alkaline), and averages pH 7.0 (neutral). Electrical conductivity (EC) is low with a range
