Soil Thickness
• The thickness of soil replaced during 1994 was verified by
sampling. Sample sites for the New Horizon 1 and 2 mining area
were selected systematically utilizing a 467 foot by 467 foot grid
pattern. Sites at New Horizon 1 were located and staked in the
field by compass and by controlled pacing. Sites at New Horizon
2 were surveyed and staked in the field using a Geodimeter 510
total surrey station.
A 2-3/4 inch bucket auger was used at each site to excavate a pilot
hole through the entire soil strata. An abrupt boundary, defined
by color and rock fragment content, typically occurred at the
soil/spoil interface. The replaced soil thickness was measured
through the pilot hole immediately after encountering the spoil.
•
Soil thickness was deternlined at the 36 sites at NH1 and 5 at NH2
shown on Exhibit 94.3 and 94.4. Soil thickness information for
each sample site is located on the map.
New Horizon 2 has three different soil thickness requirements; 12
inches for Rangeland, 36 inches for Irrigated Pastureland, and 18
inches for Irrigated Rangeland, as can be seen on Exhibit 94.4.
Samples from: Sediment Pond hlnbarilanents 002, 004, 005, the light
duty access roadways leading to each pond, and samples from the
_• 3
