~~
Pennittee: WHITEWATER BUILDING MATERIALS CORP. PAGE T
Permit #: M-77-129
Operation Name: WHITEWATER 500 PIT
Anniversary Date: 09/2Z/0
imported and placed in the banks on the southwest corner of
Stage 2, where it will be below the water line.
(2) Most of the reclamation is complete in Phase 1 at this time
and the lake surface has stabilized higher than expected.
This year we completed sloping on 1,650 linear feet along the
north, west, and south sides of the lake in Stage 2 (blue).
The green cross hatched areas show where we have material
stored to create slopes in the same area. Only the final
grading is necessary on this area. Mining ended in Stage D
this year, leaving only minor amounts of material on the floor
of the stage that will be removed as needed. We have approxi-
mately 100,000 cy of overburden stored in Stages 2, & C that
will be used on the alpha stages and in Stage 2 as needed
(yellow). These piles are in a constant state of flux as
areas are stripped and resoiled. Where they remain undis-
turbed, they have weeds and grass growing on them that pro-
tects them from erosion. The settling pond is still being
used to clean process water (brown).
Weed control began this year as suggested by the Mesa County
Weed Inspector, on the area around the active mine. We sprayed
for Knapweed on October 4th 6 5th, 1999 and for Knapseed and
ragweed on July 1 thru 4, 2000. The fall spraying was reason-
ably successful but the July spraying had mixed to disappoint-
ing results. We will continue spraying as needed.
All the seedbed areas were completed in Phases Y and 1 last
fall in time for planting. The light green area was seeded
November 29 and 30, 1999 with the Lake Area Mix. The areas
colored dark green was seeded with the approved Terrace Area
Seedmix on December 1, 1999. Seed was drilled on shallower
slopes and doubled, when broadcast on steeper slopes. The
seedbeds were raked to set the seed before the mulch was
applied. Straw was blown on the seeded areas, a 2000 lb/ac,
and crimped during December 2 & 3. Attached are representa-
tive copies of the seed bag tags for the seed use in 1999. We
had fairly good germination this spring but when the drought
set in, the grasses began to wilt and dry out. We mowed the
weeds in June 1999 as suggested by Mesa county Weed Control
Coordinator and the CSU Extension Service representative. We
will evaluate the site next spring to determine if additional
seeding will be needed. We think the grass will return but
will not know for sure until it is to late to plant in the
spring. Any remedial reseeding will take place in late fall
of 2001. Remember, that the area inside the road in Phases X
& Y are cattle feed areas and do not have to be revegetated.
Please refer to Map 1 of 2 (west area) in this annual report
for the areas discussed above. The area where sloughing has
taken place on the east side of the lake remains as it was
last year (tan). It covers an area approximately 175 yards
wide.
