• A summary of survival by species is presented in Table 20. Gaznbel's Oak survival is •
greater than all other species at 94% and 83% in the 1995 and 1996 plots respectively.
The stem density for Gambel's Oak consistently increased between 1995 and 1996
monitoring periods. Gaznbel's Oak appeazs to resprout readily from damaged tops which
may have been courited as dead. Some stems may have been missed in previous tallies if
-leaf drop had occurred and herbaceous vegetation was present. This same phenomenon
occuned with chokecherry on one monitoring plot as well. Servicebeny, which does not
readily resprout from roots, did not exhibit this pattern.
• Chokecherry survival was 81 % and 73% in 1995 and 1996 planting units respectively.
Although survival is high, poor growth was exhibited by plants. Poor growth is likely a
symptom of continuous browse by elk, deer, and marmots. Root systems, however, were
examined and demonstrated substantial growth. Intensive browse control efforts. such as
the application of tree protectors, deer proof fencing, and hunting are necessary to
increase plant survival and growth on all sites.
Table 20.
