1
3.0 CONSTRUCTION EARTHWORK
t All construction materials used in the construction of the Phase II Raise 2 of the main
embankment were borrowed from the open pit mining activities at the site and placed in a
stockpile by the owner, BMRI, prior to the start of construction. The materials were borrowed
selectively based on the gradation required as outlined in the project specifications. In general,
' the material would be described as TYPE 1: gravely sand.
The earthwork contractor, SLV Earth Movers, Inc. mobilized to the site on AulSttst 14, 1995
t and demobilized on September 14, 1995.
' Initial construction began with the grading of the tailings in the footprint of the embankment
raise out to the upstream toe of the raise, to an elevation of approximately 8600 ft or slightly
' below.
Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Co. Type 4553 non-woven geotextile was placed over the tailings
prior to the placement of the first lift of fill, as per the design specifications.
On August 16, 1995 settlement markers were installed above the geotextile, prior ~:o placing the
initial lift of fill. Periodic surveys of the settlement markers were done by BMRI purvey crews.
Approximately 122,126 yd' of Type 1 fill material were placed in the Phase II Raise 2
construction.
The original specifications for construction of the embankment raise set forth in the permit
application report dated September 1989 called for material Type 1 fill for constructing the
embankment raise as a homogeneous, mono-fill structure. The gradation limits for material Type
1 were revised by the Engineer to increase the allowable percent passing a No. 2(a0 sieve from
a maximum of 10 percent to a maximum of 35 percent. This revision was approved on January
4, 1994 as Technical Revision TR-016 to Permit No. M-88-112.

a
