Wayne Sowards
7/16/81 '
page 4
tions provided on the sites were not the same. During our
visit we were given the report records to examine (we were not
able to visit the sites due to impassable roads and the site
form for 5MF290 is not on file with the State Archeologist's
Office and thus was not available for our review). Based on
the site form for 5MF9.79 (completed by Archeological Services)
and the report information for 5t•1F290 (completed by David
6reternit:~), it was our opinion that the sites were indeed the
same. Both sites had the same pictorial r•einains, they are in
similar topographic settings (a small sandstone overhang), and
both are located on the same topographic feat;rre only one-
quarter mile apart. Subsequent to our visit, Utah International
personnel returned to walk ttre ridges of the area to look for
two separate sites. Tfiey established that the two sites were
indeed the same, and they are located at the point on the map
designated as 5MF944 (information relayed to us via phone on
7/7/81).
6, The area erroneously designated 5MF950 on the Fig.l topographic
map in the original report was revisited. At this location was
found a hole in the ground which appears to be have been
a one-man coal mining operation or a coal prospect pit.
Examination of this area showed an excavated depression
20 ft NS x 40 ft EW x 4-12 ft deep. In addition to the hole,
one broken 4" x 4" sawed piece of timber was observed. There
were nu other artifacts found, and the area appears to have
no significance. It is our opinion that tare area is not a
prehistoric or historic site, and it therefore was not formally
recorded.
7, The location of site 5MF348 was incorrect on the map following
the site form in the text (pg. 132). This has been corrected
and a new page for the text is attached.
8, One new site, outside the original survey area, was recorded
during the revisit. This site, 5t4F1399, was initially visited
by Caraveo, Greer, and Loscheider of Archeological Services
in 1930 during Caraveo's Utah International survey. It was
not recorded at that time because it was outside the survey
area.
The site lies on a hillside just north of a recently constructed
earthern dam. The site contains two sandstone slab foundations
at the northern area and one at the southern end. The northern-
most foundation is dry-laid with yellow sandstone slabs (3-4
in. thick, 12-16 in. across). The foundation is 8 ft NS x 16
ft EW with walls approximately 2 ft thick. The west side of
the foundation is n.ow partially covered by new road blading, and
there has been some silting on the outside. The height of the
walls is indeterminable, but they were probably 2 to 2-1 /2 ft
• hiyh and covered with a wooden superstructure. No artifacts
~ were found in association with this foundation.
,r•.
~, rJ~~
