Wayne Sowards
7/16/81
page 3
~•
f;owever, the possible effect of blasting on archeological sites
is dependent upon the magnitude of the blast, the distance from
Lhe blasting location to the cultural resource site, the position
of the blast in surficial or subsurface contexts, the nature of
the bedrock in the area, and the nature of the cultural resource
site to be potentially affected. Evaluation of these variables
as an open system must he coordinated between Utah International
and the responsible permitting or regulatory agency.
3. Site 51.1F945 was revisited and reevaluated. This small, sparse
prehistoric lithic scatter site is located on a small silt-covered
hillcrest at the edge of a canyon floodplain. Presently the
site is represented by scattered primary and secondary vrhite
and gray chalcedony flakes. There are a few small cobbles
which were probably utilized as manos as there is some pecking
and grinding on the naturally ovate to circular cobbles. A few
reddened burned rocks were found scattered on the surface.
There is one eroded disturbed hearth at the northern end of
the site which is perhaps 5 cm below the surface.
The integrity of the site is poor due to gravel operations and
plowing around and across the site, along with some animal
burrowing and erosion. The edges of the hillcrest have eroded
to a white sandy clay (sterile). The surface is covered with
a light broom silty soil which is perhaps 30 cm thick in some
areas. The potential for the site to contribute additional
information is limited to a slight possibility for semi-intact
buried cobble hearths which could perhaps date the occupation.
No diagnostics were found at the site. The age and original
site size are unknown. The site does not aopear able to
contribute information to the local or regional prehistory,
and thus does not appear to meet criteria for the National
Register.
A revised site form for this site and anew summary page for
the text (pg. 23) are attached.
4. Site 5MF950 was incorrectly located on Figure 1 of the
original report. This has been corrected and the revised
map is attached. The exact location is Sld/SW/SE/NW Sec.32
T5N-R90W.
5. Is 5t1F949 (recorded during the A.S. survey of the Trapper
I4ine) the same site as 5MF290 (previously recorded by
Breternitz)? After a careful examination of all records it
was felt by Utah International personnel that sites 5MF290 and
5MF949 were probably the same site, although the legal loca-
l.!•
2 •~g$`I.
5,_~
