Wayne Sowards
7/16/81
page 5
A second smaller foundation is located adjacent to the one
described above. This foundation is made of sandstone
slabs and is mostly covered by the graded road. The form of
the foundation is indeterminable. Presumably it is another
small room. No artifacts were found in association with this
feature.
The third structure is located at the northern end of a
new stock pond, about 20U ft south of the other structure.
This foundation is also Wade of sandstone slabs. The slabs
are about 12-30 in. long and 3-6 in. thick.' The inside
dimensions on this foundation are about 10 ft NS x 11 ft EW.
Much silting and erosion leas taken place here, and the struc-
tural inteyrity is essentially destroyed.
Artifacts present near the third structure include three pieces of
iron which appear to be from an old iron stove (none diagnostic),
sawn boards (1" x 4"), and one medial fragment from an iron can
(no top; no seam).
It was estimated at the time of the original visit in 1980
that it was an old sheepherder's camp-squatter settlement from
probably the early 1900's to perhaps Depression days. It was
also thouyht at that tirue that there was probably a sepaae
~. spring here (coming out of the hillside) and perhaps a small
well. It is thought that structure ~1 may be an old sepage
tank. No diagnostic artifacts were found at the site.
The integrity of the site is poor. There do not appear to be
be any buried cultural deposits, and the site does not appear
to have the potential to contribute to the regional or local
history of the area. The site does not appear to meet criteria
for the National Register. The data have been recorded, and
no further work is recommended.
The completed form is attached for this site. A copy of this
form has been filed with the Colorado SHPO's Office.
This should provide the new information you requested. If we can be
of further assistance, please call.
Sincerely,
tlavis A. Loscheider
Assistant Director
• MAL:m
Enclosures
~ .~[~
SEP
