,~ <br />' LUMSDE~I CAt1Y0N _1;P,AVE:L PIT <br />PIT PURPOS't: <br />' It is the desire of Mesa County to develop a materials <br />pit at this location for the primary purpose of obtaining <br />the base material necessary to maintain the roads in the <br />area as all-weather roads. Materials at this site may also <br />be found suitable for surface graveling. <br />SURFICIAL GEOLOGY: <br />Based on soils survey this unit is on moderately steep <br />~' or steep colluvial or alluvial fans mainly in the Gateway <br />part of the survey area. The colluvial or alluvial materials <br />t derived from sandstone, granite, gneiss, and schist. The <br />materials consist mainly of deposits of cobbles, boulders, <br />' and stones that are 10 to 200 feet thick or more. <br />Included in mapping are some areas of sandy loam or <br />' loamy sand 4 to 6 inches thick. <br />The water intake rate is very high, and the water hold- <br />ing capacity is low. The vegetation consists of scrubby <br />pinyon and juniper, sparse grass, cottonthorn horsebrush, <br />annual weeds and cactus. <br />' This mapping unit is used mainly as watershed and wild- <br />life areas and for some scenic recreation. <br />METHOD OF OPERATION: <br />' A. Quantity and Quality of Material Produced: <br />' It is estimated material production will be <br />approximately 50,D00 cubic yards of 3/4" and 3" <br />aggregate mined, crushed and sized according to <br />' specifications. Area of operation will be approx- <br />imately 5.62 acres with an average elevation of <br />4600 feet. <br />1 <br />
