The statement "A fair portion of the
area to be mined is an extensive marsh rimmed with Cottomaoods and
grown-up rushes and other marsh vegetation", does not coincide with
the SCS on-site inspection of the project area, wliicl~ states "Tlie
north part of the expansion area is abandoned irrigated cropland".
It is the applicant's feeling that in excess of 90% of the permit area
is abandoned cropland or dry river bottom.
The applicant caill mine no closer than 100' to the bank of the Arkansas
• River. A 50' buffer will be left immediately north of the river with the
described tamarisl; and mature cottonwood undisturbed. Tlie SO' strip
north of this will be used to stockpile segregated topsoil anr] overburden.
Also, the applicant will take normal protective measures to prevent the
river from eroding into the pit area.
•
