A
fair portion of the area to be mined is an extensive marsh rimmed with
cottonwoods and grown up in rushes and other marsh vegetation.
Pssessment of impact:
The riparian habitat in the mined area would be lost; at least for a number of years.
The area is presently densely vegetated and is inhibiting a northward-progressing in
the Arkansas River From doing extenslve erosion. The loss of the mature cottonwoods
and marsh area would be unfortunate as these vegetative types ace declining. This area
of the river and the marsh is fairly heavily used in the Eall and winter by migrating
an~ wintering waterfowl and as a resting and feeding area for herons. A buffer of 50 Eeet
Hine ecllamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration
is designed).
may be insufficie
Excavated areas should be sloped 3:1 as a safety measure for to prevent the
humans. The area on the north end of the tract away from the river from e. o.. i.
riparian vegetation should be recovered with topsoil and into the mined a
• reseeded per. SCS recommendations. The riparian area should
be allowed to revegetate with cottonwood.
~~ ~A
Fzepared By: Ronald D.
