definitions can be found in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 964, "A Land Use and
Land Cover Classification System For Use With Remote Sensor Data".
Environmental. Volumes I and II of the "Environmenta] Impact Statement: NorthwF•st
Colorado Coal", prepared by the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, in
1976, provide basic reference material for a tri -county area including Routt Country.
While the information contained in these documents is of a general nature, it is useful in
substantiating the existence of various land uses in the region and also provides a
historical perspective on agriculture and land use activities in the region. Data from
these reports are utilized in the cli scussion of regional trends and patterns concerning
productivity and capability.
Some of the information contained in this report's narratives with respect to condition,
productivity, and capability of the Dli ne Permit and Adjacent Areas is based on information
contained in Tab 9, Soil Survey and Tab 10, Vegetation Survey of the Seneca II-W Mine
Permit. Materials on agricultural soils and alluvial valley floors have also been
abstracted from these reports.
Fish and Wildlife resource reports are contained in Tab 11, Wildlife Survey. These
reports provide details concerning the wildlife species active in the Mine Permit Area
along with the potential impacts associated with the construction, operation, and
reclamation activities encompassed by the Seneca II-W Mine.
Methodology
Land Use Interpretation. Initial land use determinations were based on aerial photo
interpretation and analysis. Aerial photos which served as the basic reference source
were color stereo pairs obtained from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of I_a nd
Management. The scale of these air photos is 1:20,000; and the flight dates ive re
September 25 and October 12, 1977.
An "Old Delft" stereoscope was used in examining land uses from the aerial photos for the
Mine Permit and Adjacent Areas. Land use determinations were based on the ten (10)
category land use classification scheme specified in the Regulations of the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board for Coal Mining.
•
C~
4
