• Another set of land use determinations was also made based on an interpretation of the
State of Colorado's 1973 "photo quads". (These "photo quads" correspond in scale to the
U.S.C.S. 1:24,000 topographic maps.) The two sets of land use determinations were then
compared. Differences between the two analyses as well as land use photo signature
questions and any other interpretation problems were all noted on U.S. Geological Survey
topographic maps ("topo quads") for field checks and verification.
State of Colorado "photo quads" were also used to identify general regional land uses as
well as those adjacent to the proposed haul road. Again, any interpretation problems were
noted on the appropriate topographic maps for later field verification,
Land Use Mapping. All land use determination problems noted on the "topo quads" were
resolved as a result of field investigations carried out in September of 1979. Following
field verification, draft maps of land use were prepared at several scales: Regional,
1;126,720; and Adjacent Area, Haul Road, and Mine Permit Area, 1:24,000.
Prior to preparation of land use maps for the final report, the draft maps were updated
• using a bl ueline print (1:400) of aerial photography flown on June 1, 1980. Field checks
of the updated material were performed during December 1980.
During 1990, black and white and color stereo photography, supported by ground truthing,
was used to document current land use within and adjacent to the permit and proposed
expansion areas.
Premini ng Land Use
Land use associated with the proposed Seneca II-W coal mining operation was examined at
two different scales: (1) Regional Patterns; and (2) Adjacent Areas and Mine Permit Area.
Regional land use is intended to show the relationship between various types of land use
and the Mine Permit Area. Consequently, because of these intentions and the map scale,
these land use categories and boundaries are highly generalized. Using a larger scale,
land use adjacent to the Mine Permit Area and the proposed haul road was examined. Some ~~
generalization resulted since adjacent areas were examined to determine: (1) continuity
of land use categories found in the Mine Permit Area and (2) the proximity of specific I
• categories to the Mine Permit Area and haul road. Sitespecific land use involved a
determination of types of land use found within the Seneca 11-W Mine Permit Area. At each
5
