Total number of acres surveyed: 110 acres
17. Comments: All level to moderately sloping areas in the two blocks containing the proposed drill
locations were surveyed for cultural resources. Heavi]y wooded and steep slopes (greater than 30 percent
grade) were not surveyed. Surveyed aeeas included the staked drill locations and all other feasible locations
within the block areas.
1V. ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: Rugged foothill ridges north and south of Minnesota Creek
Current Land Use: grazing and recreation
19. Flora: Gambel oak, servicebeny, chokecherry, snowbeny, grasses, and forbs, plus stands of
Douglas fir and aspen on north-facing slopes and on the slopes of gulches.
20. Soils/Geology: Fine to medium fine brown sandy loams with localized sandstone outcrops.
Most of the sediments aze residual or slope colluvium with fairly narrow
bands of poorly consolidated alluvium in drainage bottoms.
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility is generaIly good to excellent (60 to 90 percent): There
aze small to patchy aeeas of thicker undergrowth and leaf litter where
visibility is reduced to fair to good (30 to 50 percent).
22. Comments:
The latter aeeas include several portions of the.tow, gently sloping area between Mianesota Creek
Road and the staked location for Shaft 4.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: OAIiP Date: 5/20/2005
24. Previous Survey Activity
In the project area: A 1979 block survey for an oakbrush burn overlapped with the eastern
edges of both survey blocks. In addition there have been seven surveys that included
numerous small hregulaz blocks and access corridors in the aeeas azound the survey blocks.
The latter surveys included well pads, core holes, methane drainage wells, ponds and trails,
and an enlargement of the Minnesota Reservoir spillway,
In the general region: Surveys in the genera] region away from the North Fork Gunnison
River valley have been similaz to those in the immediate project azea. Surveys in the river
valley have also included surveys for highway improvements and mine facilities.
25. Known Cultural Resources
In the project azea: A small number of isolated ]ithic artifacts and small lithic sites have been
found in the project vicinity, principally along the floor of the Minnesota Creek valley. This
includes SGN1103 found at the northeast edge of the Shaft 4 survey block. The location of
this artifact has been obliterated by improvements to Minnesota Creek Road.
In the general region (summarize): Resources found in the general region have included
widely dispersed prehistoric artifacts in drainage valleys, segments of irrigation ditches,
stock camps, fence remnants, and other features associated with historic stock grazing.
