The work plan was that after the literature review and file
search, an intensive pedestrian inventory of each of the
well pads and access roads was to be conducted. Any
cultural resources located during the survey was to be
properly recorded on the appropriate Colorado Historical
Society forms.
Previous work in the project vicinity indicates a rather
low density of cultural sites. In the inventory of 3,200
acres for the Seneca II mine permit area only five sites
were noted (Wheeler 1980). The survey of 123 acres in
Twentymile Park found four sites, all historic (Killam
1984). Given this low site density, it was not expected
that sites would be found in the small area (11 acres)
inventoried by Powers for the current project.
5.0 FIELD ![ETTHODS
Each of the proposed well pads and access roads was closely
inspected on the ground by a qualified professional
archaeologist from Powers. In the case of the well pads a
100 by 100 ft area was walked using parallel transects
spaced less than 15 m apart. The access roads were
surveyed by walking a single zig-zag transect for ca. 15 m
on each side of the expected centerline, covering a 100 ft
wide corridor.
Well Pad #1 is located in the SE1/45W1/4SE1/4NE1/4 of
Section 28, T.6N.,R.87W. It is on the east side of Grassy
Creek, west of the main office for the Seneca Ii mine. The
pad is adjacent to the creek, on the narrow portion of the
floodplain, south of a series of side canyons. The access
route is in the NE1/NE1/4SE1/4 and SE1/4SE1/4NE1/4 of
Section 28. It is about 1,000 ft long, extending from an
existing two-track trail which takes off from the north
side of the Peabody main road just on the west side of a
steep ridge above Grassy Creek. Surface visibility was
poor, ranging from 0 to 10$, with vegetation consisting
mainly of sagebrush and grasses. A total of about 2.3
acres were inventoried at this location. No cultural
resources were found.
Well Pad #2 is located in the NW1/4SE1/4NE1/4NW1/4 of
Section 34, T.6N.,R.87W. It is on the east side of Grassy
Creek, southeast of some maintenance buildings on the mine
property. The pad is on a relatively flat and open
floodplain, adjacent to the creek, on the north toe of a
low hill, and east of a higher and steeper ridge. The
access route is through the S1/2NW1/4NE1/4 and
SE1/4NE1/4NW1/4 of Section 34. It is about 1,600 ft long,
extending from an existing two-track trail leading off to
the west from a mine road heading southeast from the
maintenance area, along a fence heading west for about 300
