Compl - Critical Area Planting (Practice code osed tion 342) Site of Min in Sloping and Shaping: All banks will be worked so that the slopes do not exceed 3:1, and where possible, 6:1 slopes should be attained. The length of the slope on the shaped areas will be properly con- trolled with level terraces constructed across the slopes. The amount of terraces needed will be based on the final slopes attained after shaping, and the spacing will be determined by applying the univer- sal soil loss equation. Diversions will be constructed above the south and east sides of the pit in order to prevent excess runoff water from flow- ing onto the shaped areas. Approximately 900 cubic yards of earth will be required to construct these diversions. Topsoil Application: Following shaping & construction of the necessary terraces, the entire treatment area will have a minimum of 6 inches of topsoil applied on the surface. The topsoil is to be ob- tained by stripping and stockpiling it before mining is started. Cover Crop: A cover crop of oats or barley will be planted after the topsoil appli- cation in order to: 1) provide quick protection from wind and water erosion, and 2) allow for proper settlement of the topsoil in the necessary places. If ad- verse conditions exist it may be necessary to plant a cover crop in two consecutive years. Fertilizing: Apply 50-pounds of available nitrogen and 50-pounds of available phos- phate per acre immediately prior to seecy'- ing the pasture and hay land species. ,/~ ~C ~}
