ti
an AVF assessment was conducted in the spring and summer cf that
year. Results of the assessment are presented in Exhibit 30, •
Santistevan Canyon Study.
As described for Apache and Ciruela Canyons, the AVF
study exhibits a similar situation. The canyon has a narrow valley
bottom consisting of shallow alluvial material. Available water is
limited and associated with bedrock outcrop:; and canyon constric-
tions. As such, no alluvial aquifer has been identified. In
addition, no subirrigation, flood irrigation, or historic ac~ricul-
tural activities exist in the area to be unc3ermined.
Lopez Canyon - Section 2.04.7 of this document note=s that
Lopez Canyon has a drainage area of 860 acre:;. Land use is grazing
and wildlife habitat. Data collected from the surface water
station at the mouth of the canyon (Annual Hydrology
Reports)indicates no surface flow. As with the other canyons in
the permit area, WFC requests that Lopez Canyon be eliminated from
AVF consideration because of insufficient water availability for
irrigation, the absence of historic agricultural activity, arrd size
of the canyon.
Conclusion - Extensive study of the area which will be
affected by the Golden Eagle Mine indicates that an alluvial valley
floor is present in the area of the Puroatoire River and Wet
Canyon. The field mapping and associated work for the Purgatoire
River is shown in Exhibit 6, Hydrology and. Geology Information,
which has been prepared by Water, Waste and Land, Ltd. Mapping of
the AVF in Wet Canyon was completed from aerial photography and
field investigations; however, WFC will co=ntinue to monitor Wet
Canyon and collect additional data to confirm the determination
that Wet Canyon is an AVF. These renewable resource lands and
areas which have been traditionally flood irrigated or which have
been subirrigated are delineated on Map 16, Structure Inventory and
Map 7, Regional Hydrology, respectively. During the study and
delineation of these alluvial valley floor;, numerous monitoring
wells were drilled which are also shown on Map 7, Regional
Hydrology.
