• a deeper colluvial (up to 17 feet) created by deposited material at
the lower end of the canyon. This situation has concentrated water
in the colluvial material forming a pocket as identified by wells
3 and 4. In addition, seeps 15 and 16 have been monitored in the
spring and seep survey over the past two years. Seep 15 is located
between wells 5 and 6 and has exhibited the same limited water
condition as the wells. Seep 16 is located above well 6 and
exhibits similar canyon conditions as identified in the well 3
area.
With similar conditions, the same conclusions from Apache
Canyon were applied to Ciruela Canyon. That is, Ciruela Canyon
does to contain an alluvial aquifer, subirrigation, flood irriga-
tion, or historic agricultural activity, and the Division found it
is not an alluvial valley floor based on size criteria.
Santistevan Canvon -Santistevan Canyon lies to the
northwest of the Golden Eagle Mine. Drainage area of the canyon is
2181 acres comprised mostly of woodland. The canyon is in the
process of being subdivided into 35 acre ranchettes. There are
currently four houses and a lodge with a swimming pool located in
the upper drainage. These structures utilize Trinidad City water.
Waste disposal is by means of septic systems and drain fields which
may supply additional water to the alluvial system. Three USGS
springs have also been identified in the canyon and appear out of
fractures between sandstones and shales which outcrop on the
surface.
Water monitoring in Santistevan Canyon began in April,
1984, with the installation of a flume station (SCF-1) and
continued through August, 1985. During this period, flow was
continuous. Monitoring was discontinued at that point in time with
the stipulation that an alluvial valley floor assessment be
completed when secondary or retreat mining is proposed under the
canyon. As longwall mining is proposed for the early 1990s,
monthly visits to the flume station resumed in January, 1989, and
• 2.06-2f
(Revised 04/27/94)
