September 11, 2006
Bureau of Land Management
C/o Dave Lehmann
2815 H Road
Grand Junction, CO 81506
RE: CAM Coal Mine Scoping Period
Dear Sir:
RE:'~tV E
eilt2E.tl) Or L»f';3 t1GMfi.
'1(N"i `~ JC-, t.. 1.
266 SEP (I P~ 4~ d I
The proposed Red Cliff coal mine will increase Mesa County's ability to receive more
dollars from Colorado's Energy and Mineral Assistance Program. The Department of
Local Affairs awarded $6,027,963 last year in energy assistance grants to numerous
capital projects throughout the county. These grants require government entities to
match funds being awarded.
One of the projects funded last year was a restoration project of the old Riverside
School building. Mesa County Valley, School District 51, received $300,000 in energy
and mineral impact grants from the Department of Local Affairs to completely restore
the 8,000 square foot building. The school district is working to convert the old Riverside
School into a multicultural community center and satellite office for the county's
workforce center. The building will also be used as the hub for School District 51's
innovative dual language immersion program.
Projects, like the one just described, could not have been completed without Energy
and Mineral Impact Assistance Grants. These grants are funded based on energy and
mineral development within their respective counties, with more development, such as
the Red Cliff Coal Mine, Mesa County is positioned to benefit from increased funding.
Sincerely,
~~~. ~a ~.
~~ 1~~- ~
~scr.~/~ J~~ ~ t ~ ~ 15 0 5
