The purpose of the visit was to examine what remained
of archaeological site SRT139 to determine whether the site would yield
any further information important to prehistory. The trip was made as
a result of a meeting held February 19, 1981 at the Mined Land Reclamation
Office. Present at that meeting were representatives of the Office of
Surface Mining, Mined Land Reclamation, Peabody Coal Company, and the
Colorado Preservation Office.
Ms. Gregonis and Mr. Hand determined that there is little or no
potential for subsurface materials on the remainder of site SRT139.
The northern half of the site, which contained [he hearth features
and the greatest number of artifacts, has been destroyed by top soil
removal. No cultural material was found in the cut banks of a gully
that cuts from east to west through the site just south of the top soil
removal area. The southern half of the site has little potential for
subsurface deposition because of steep slope. In addition, few artifacts
were found on the southern half of the site during the original survey,
and no artifacts were located during the May 16th trip. This indicates
that the southern half was not the focus of activity at the site.
Only one cultural feature was located during the May 16th visit.
This feature, the bottom of a Hearth, was located in a bladed area
adjacent to the stockpond on the western edge of the site. The hearth
was approximately one meter across and was filled with fire cracked rock.
There was not enough burned material left in the feature to retrieve a
radiocarbon sample. The remainder of the stockpond area appears to be
too disturbed to yield intact cultural remains.
•
