Claire Sullivan
May 20, 1981
Page Two
•
Because there is little potential for intact subsurface cultural
remains at SRT139, we recommend that no further excavation or monitoring
work be done on the site.
In addition to visiting SRT139, Tom [Jainwright of Peabody Coal
asked Ms. Gregonis and Mr. Hand to look at two unsurveyed areas within
the present permit area in order to determine the potential for
archaeological sites. The areas included a three quarter mile strip
west and south of the Seneca II offices in T6N R87W, in the N~ Center
of Section 34, and a steep walled canyon about a mile and a quarter
southeast of the offices in T6N R87W S~ of Section 35. The first area
lies on the western edge of the Seneca II mine and the second in an
area that has been mined and reclaimed.
A minor amount of disturbance has occurred in each of the areas.
The area west and south of the Seneca II mine office has been disturbed
by an abandoned drill pad and a power line. The canyon southeast of the
office building has been disturbed by a jeep trail and a drill pad.
No sites were found during the brief reconnaissance. However,
there is potential for sites in each of the areas. The area west
and south of the office buildings contains relatively flat localities
• adjacent to a stream. The bottom of the canyon area may contain sites
and there are several rock shelters on the sides of the canyon.
It is our understanding that these and similar unuseable areas
within the mine will be°•~isturbed. Therefore, we feel that an
archaeological survey of such areas is, at present, unnecessary.
If,however, any disturbance is planned within these presently unused
zones, they should be surveyed prior to the planned activity.
If you have any questions concerning our comments, please call
Linda Gregonis at 866-3392.
S' erely,
C
Arthur C. ownsend
State Historic Preservation Officer
ACT/LG:ss
cc: Tom Wainwright, Peabody Coal C~~mpany
•
