The second site (Site ~1J2-NW 1/4, SW 1/4, Section 35, T6N, R91W) was at the <br />entrance to the dam and terminus of the flow for Johnson Gulch. The temperature <br />was 20.5°C (68.9°F). The bottom was mud, silt and gravel. The inflow and the <br />littoral and limnetic zones behind [he dam were sampled. Neuston and Nekton <br />organisms were captured as observed. Grab samples_of the benthon zone were also <br />taken. <br />Eleven taxa were identified (Mariah, 1980). No obligate rheophiles were denoted, <br />Mayflies (Callibaetis sp.) were the most numerous. Predaceous diving beetles <br />(Dytiscidae sp.) and midges (Tribelos sp.) were next. .The other species were <br />represented by only a few specimens. <br />All drainage systems east of these first two drainages were then surveyed for the <br />existence of water sources within the proposed mine plan area. Only iwo (2) more <br />sites could be pinpointed. These included a seep in PyeatC Gulch and a spring in <br />Flume Gulch (Map M44). <br />Both sources emerge and flow for considerable distance (approximately 2,000 feet <br />(763 m) before they dissipate into the earth. <br />The site located in Pyeatt Gulch (Site ~FP1-SW 1/4, NW 1/4, Section 36, T6N, R91W) <br />originates from a small head cut and a ground water seep, Although it is only <br />2-3 feet wide, it flows for almost a half mile before it dissipates into the <br />ground. Temperature readings were not taken. The bottom was mud and cattle had <br />torn the stream bed up acquiring water. The sample was a composite from several <br />small flows between the puddles of at anding water caused by the livestock tramp- <br />ling. <br />Three taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were identified (Mariah, 1980). No <br />obligate rheophiles were found, All species were represented by Less than 6 <br />specimens. Tube worms (Tubifex sp.) were the most numerous. <br />The sample site in Flume Gulch ('Site dFl-NE 1/4, NW 1/4, Section 32, T6N, R90W) <br />was the last flowing water site located within the proposed mine plan area. <br />Several ground water seeps originate ups lope and near the sampling site (Map <br />J -9 <br />
