The fifth site (Site ~/N5-NE 1/4, SE 1/4, Section 33, T6N, R91W) is a cattle tank <br />that holds all the minor ground water interflow from the series of small seeps <br />that originate 800 fee[ (244 M) upstream. The pond is limnetic and littoral, <br />heavily vegetated and persistant year round. The bottom is mud; the temperature <br />22°C (71.6°F). The inflow trickle, deep water, edges, vegetation and bottom were <br />all sampled. Neuston and Nekton individuals were captured as observed. <br />Twelve taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were identified (Mariah, 1980). A sin- <br />gle blackfly larvae (Simulium) was noted. Zimmerman (1980) stated in [his loca- <br />tion its presence is purely accidental. Given the occurrence of this specimen in <br />a stock tank and the few Simulium sp. found at Si[e ~N4, it appears more likely <br />that the particular species or subspecies sampled is one that is adapted to len- <br />tic environments. <br />The pouch snails (Physa sp.), orb snails (Gyraulus sp.), and pond snails (~naea <br />~_); bloodworms (Tubifex and Limnodrilus sp.); damselfiles <Ischnura sp.) and <br />mayflies (Callibaetis sp.) were the most common. The other species were repre- <br />sented by less than six specimens each. <br />The second drainage sampled was Johnson Gulch (Map M44). Two (2) sites were <br />examined. This shallow stream originates from a ground water seep manifested by <br />a very slow stagnant flow for the first 300 fee[ (92 m) before flowing through a <br />small narrow gully and terminating 1,000 feet (305 m) from its source in a cattle <br />tank. Another spring (NW 1/4, NE 1/4, Section 34, T6N, R91W) 3,000 feet (915 m) <br />downstream was also contained by a small dam. The remainder of the drainage <br />within [he proposed mine plan area is ephemeral. <br />The first site in this drainage (Site ikJl-SW 1/4, SW 1/4, Section 35, T6N, R91W) <br />was a swift riffle (10-15 feet long and 3/4 inches wide) with a sandstone and <br />bedrock bottom in the narrow gully. The bottom consisted of bedrock gravel, sand <br />and silt. The water temperature was 13.5°C (56.5°F). The sample was cleaned in <br />the field and no benthic macroinvertebrates were obtained. A second attempt pro- <br />duced the same results. <br /> <br />J-8 <br />
