<br />• <br /> <br />Public Meeting Summary <br />Wednesday, May 4, 1983 <br />Page five <br />Comments, Questions, and Responses <br />Question: Couldn't an overpass be built on a fill through CWI's orchard <br />north of Highway 133? <br />Response: The overpass could not he constructed at this site without block- <br />ing in the properties located at the corner of Steven's Gulch and <br />State Highway 133. Also, some private property would need to be <br />purchased, <br />Kathy Gordon presented impacts of comparison criteria of the various alter- <br />natives, <br />Alternative #1 -Full Conveyor <br />Alternative N2 - Pneumatic Capsule Pipeline, and <br />Alternative #3 - Aerial Tramway <br />1. Air Quality -Minimal impact would occur from these alternatives. <br />2. Geoloyy and Minerals - No impact would occur as no mineral reserves are <br />located within the area. <br />3. Soils - Approximately ten acres of soil surface would be disturbed, <br />Topsoil would he salvaged and stored, impacts from erosion and sedi- <br />mentation would occur. <br />4. Surface Water - Sedimentation of surface water may occur. <br />5. Groundwater - An alluvial valley floor was identified at the area of <br />the train loadout. The hydrologic functions of the alluvial valley <br />would have to be restored following cessation of operations of the <br />mine, <br />6. Ve~et~ati~on - After removal of vegetation for construction, landscape <br />scars would be created. The stripping of vegetation v,ould also cause <br />erosion and sedimentation. <br />7. Threatened and Endangered Plants, Animals, and Fishes - No known <br />threatened and endangered plants, animals, or fishes exist within the <br />areas affected by these alternatives. No eagles' nests are located <br />within these areas. <br />8, Wildlife - A decrease in natural habitat would occur with the construc- <br />tion of the alternatives. A shift in movement of the animals might <br />also occur because of fencing, increased stress during construction <br />would also occur. <br />9, Cultural/Historical Values - No known cultural or historical resources <br />are in the area of these alternatives. <br />1(1. Visual Resource Mana ement - Long-term impacts as a result of the <br />straight ine form, focal element and color contrasts will occur with <br />these alternatives. <br />11. Recreation Values - Some impact on hunting, hiking, and four-wheel <br />recreation va ues will occur alony these transportation routes. <br />Approximately one-third of the area is private property, however. <br />12. Noise - A low level, constant sound of the belt and power stations <br />might occur. Warniny horns are also a noise impact of the conveyor <br />belt. <br />13. Special Desiynated Areas - There are no known special desiynated areas <br />alony the routes of these alternatives. <br />
