20
•
Drill Y.oles
All evidence of cultural activity located on drill hole sites or access
alignments is recent in nature. Debris and disturbances noted include those
associated with vehicular travel through the areas, surveying activities, drilling
activities, and recreational use of the North Fork Canyon.
Hawk's Nest t•Sine Area
The cursory examination given the HawiC's 4iest Nine area revealed only re-
cent arxi major disturbances resulting from mining activities. Disturbance resulting
Fran vehicular travel and coal processing and transport were noted. It is highly
probable that arty historic or prehistoric remains that may have existed in the area
have been displaced or destroyed.
Mini 4laste Disposal Area
One isolated prehistoric artifact, one isolated historic artifact, and much
recent debris were noted in this project area.
Recent debris appeared to be the result of use of this area as a dump.
Numerous piles of recent trash occur throughout the area and include bottles and
bars Frith screw top lids, cans with crimped as opposed to soldered seams, and plas-
tic and rubber items.
The skeletal remains of sheep were also noted in the project area. This
may indicate that the area was previously used for sheep grazing (which may also
qualify as a partial explanation for the lack of vegetation in the area). However,
the occurrence of tyro sheep skeletons with a recent trash pile may indicate that
carcasses were merely disposed of with other domestic trash.
One historic bottle fragment was noted in a pile of more recent trash. The
item is the neck anti to minus of a bottle with mold seams extending to Frithin one
inch of the terminus, and then curving at the end. It is discolored to a faint
green, with rainbowed blotches across the surface. The item was not collected.
A prehistoric isolated find was encountered during investigations and was
collected. The item is a dark brown translucent chert flake with two snap fractures
and a slight amount of lateral retouch. Though breakage has removed the proximal
• potion of the flare, slight medial t:~ickening may indicate that the flake had a
bulb of percussion when whole.
