11
#1 and #2, and many pieces of more recent trash were only partially exposed
in the sandy soil. This may indicate that aeolian deposition is ongoing in the
area.
Tom Hurst of Yfestenn Slope Carbon pointed out an interesting section
corner marker in this area. The marker consists of a sandstone slab with a slash
chiseled in two perpendicular faces. Hurst explained that the number of markings
on each face indicate the position of the corner in miles from the nearest town-
ship and range lines
Oliver Po:aer Plant Area
The Oliver Power Plant is a large, brick structure located between the
North Forlc and Highway 133• The building and interior remain intact except for
broken window panes, and the original contents have been altered only by the ad-
dition of modern electricity gauges. Plate Ia shows the Oliver Power Plant struc-
ture. The entire Oliver activity area has been recorded as site 5 GN254.
An examination of the equpment in the power plant revealed indications of
its crate of construction and period of use. Two "Stirling Boilers" (manufactured
•by the Babcock and ililcox Compary~) carry plaques bearing the contract number 5-6579
and the date 1930 (Plate Ib). The plant bulletin board carries a certificate irr-
dicatino these boilers were last inspected in 1954. Other equipment recorded in
the power plant includes two Taylor Stokers, and General Electric Turbines. Ap-
pendix B contains data available from Oliver Power Plant machinery.
Two structures exist dust west of the power plant. George Norris, the
original poerer plant operator, lives in the larger house.
Structural resins exist in the tJorth Fork floodplain in the vicinity of
the Oliver Power Plant. Regains consist of millet lumber and log fragments, rou.-~d
nails, concrete foundation blocks, alu,~ninum beer cans, asphalt shingles, and screw
top bars and dugs (Plate Ic). One vitreous china fragment bearing the inscrip-
tioa "Edwin M. Knowles China Co. 30-2-11" was recorded.
Additional Survey Areas
The area immediately south of the North Fork of the Gunnison at the Oliver
Power Plant was investigated for further potentially historic remains. The old
• entrance to the Oliver Aline, the remains of the coal mill, and additional structural
remains xere discovered.
