Merino Series - Contd. <br />• <br /> <br />R1 6- 9"-Shattered andesite with 10 to 20 percent volume of very <br />pale brown (lOYR 7/3) loam filling verticai and horizontal <br />crevices; few very fine roots; abrupt boundary. (3 to 10 <br />inches thick) <br />R2 9"-- Hard andesite rock. <br />Range in Characteristics: Depth to hard unshattered bedrock is 10 to 20 <br />inches. Volume of coarse fragments ranges from 35 to 90 percent in the <br />soil above unshattered bedrock. Merino soils have mean annual soil <br />temperature of 44° to 46°F. and average summer soil temperature of 55° to <br />58°F. The hue is 2.SY through 7.SYR. Value as dark as 4 dry and 2 moist <br />occurs in the upper two or three inches of the Al horizon in some pedons. <br />The soils are slightly acid to mildly alkaline. <br />Parachute Series (X2) <br /> <br />The Parachute series is a member of the loamy, skeletal, mixed <br />family of Typic Cryoborolls. <br />Typical Pedon: Parachute loam <br />AL 0- 5"-Grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) loam. dark brown (lOYR 3/3) <br />moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure that parts to <br />moderate fine granular; glightly hard, very friable, <br />slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; <br />neutral; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick) <br /> <br />
