• Hesperus Series - Contd.
• part of the solum'and C horizon above 40 inches and these are mainly '~ to
10 inches in diameter. These soils are moist in some part of the moist-
ure control section more than ~ the time the soil temperature is 41°F or
higher or have dry value of less than 4.5 in the surface 7 inches of the
mollic epipedon but are dry in all parts of the moisture control section
at some time in most years. The A horizon has hue of SY through 7.SYR,
value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 through 3. It ranges
from slightly acid to mildly alkaline (1:5 dilution unbuffered organic
dye). The B2t horizon has hue of SY through 7.SYR, value of 4 through 7
dry, 2 through 6 moist, and chroma of 1 through 4. It is typically loam
or clay loam but clay ranges from 18 to 35 percent, silt from 15 to 55
percent and sand from 20 to 60 percent with less than 35 percent being
fine or coarse sand. This horizon ranges from slightly acid to mildly
alkaline (1:5 dilution unbuffered organid dye). The C horizon has hue of
SY through 7.SYR. It is typically loam or clay loam but clay ranges from
• 18 to 35 percent, silt 20 to 60 percent, and sand 20 to 60 percent. This
horizon ranges from slightly acid to mildly alkaline (1:5 dilution unbuf-
• fered dye).
Merino Series (X2)
The Merino series is a member of the loamy-skeletal, mixed, nonacid
family of Lithic Cryorthents.
Typical Pedon: Merino flaggy loam
Al 0- 6"-Pale brava (lOYR 6/3) flaggy loam, dark grayish brown
(lOYR 4/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft,
very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very
fine and fine roots and fine interstitial pores; many
clear unstained sand grains; 25 percent flaggs, 35 percent
` channers and the fine channers form a nearly complete
shingling of the soil surface; slightly acid; clear wavy
• boundary.
