' will consume large amounts of ,nitrogen which could create a
revegetation weakness or failure. Fertilization will be done at a
i ' rate of 50 pounds of Nitrogen, 50 pounds of Phosphorous; , and 30
pounds of Potassium per acre . During the mixing process these
fertilizers will be incorporated into the upper portions of the
' growth medium.
The process of creating a soil will be done either between )
October and late November or between late March and early May. r.3b
Seeding of the areas treated will occur within 5 days of this
' treatment .
REVEGETATION: Revegetation of this site will be difficult due to
' the poor growth medium. However, through the selection o:: species
adapted to gravelly soils the degree of success can be :improved.
Little direction in the revegetation can be taken from the nature
of the surrounding vegetation. The natural grass dominated
' vegetation developed under different conditions than those found on
this site . This is indicated by the high content of cryptogamic
species (especially lichens) . Although some of the same grass
' species that occur in the natural vegetation can he used , in the
seeding of this site, the emphasis should be on species that
provide high soil building capability. Therefore, the emphasis
should be on establishing a growth of sufficient density to control
' erosion and of special biochemical composition that will enhance
the rate of soil development. Matching the surrounding grassland
vegetation to a high degree would probably not be possible unless
' all of the original soil had been saved.
Therefore, the seed mixture to be used place's great emphasis
on highly productive introduced grasses , deep rooted legumes (soil
builders) , and a small amount of species similar to the surrounding
grass dominated vegetation. The latter are included in hopes that
the vegetation will eventually develop toward something similar to
the surrounding grass dominated vegetation. However , the highly
' competitive introduced grasses and many of the special varieties of
natives tend to achieve community closure quickly and this often
blocks successional pathways unless total vegetation disruption
occurs after sufficient soil development has occurred. On the
positive side, however, rapid community closure results in quick
erosion control , which on these gravels is of paramount importance. 1
The following seed mixture will be planted on this site . tl
' Seeding rates are based on broadcasting. / This is the preferred
method of seeding this site . Although the seed could be drilled at
half the broadcast rate, drilling is not recommended. Planting ✓
' will be done within 5 days of surface treatment as described in the
previous section. However, IN NO CASE will seed be distributed on
top of snow that has fallen since the surface treatment needed to
' produce the growth medium.
' 4
