First, soils throughout this area are poorly developed,
except in the bottomlands where construction does not generally
' occur anyway. So, excess soils from construction sites probably
will not be available. Second, because most home owners in this
area prefer to establish more or less natural vegetation around
' their homes , excess soils would probably be used at the :home site
and would not be available for disposal at this site . But, IF
excess soils are available and IF a disposal site is needed by a
home builder , this site could be made available for that purpose.
' Because this option is highly speculative no commitment can be
made. The plan therefore emphasizes utilization of onsite
resources .
' / All of the soil that can be saved is located west of the
existing operations . This soil will be stockpiled along the
western boundary of the property . When the excavation of the west
' hill is completed the stockpiled soil can be simply pushed over the
ifinal slope . Unfortunately, the area of the final slope is large
jin proportion to the amount of soil that will be available . ,ha
iTherefore , unless the soil is spread to a depth of a fraction of an
t inch, only the upper portions of the slope will receive topsoil to
a depth of about 2 or 3 inches. The remaining slope will. need to
The treated in another fashion. This would include creation of a
' growth medium using onsite resources and/or use of excess soils as
described above.
Protection of the topsoil stockpiles will be achieved by
seeding them with the following mixture .
TOPSOIL PROTECTION MIXTURE
' p• SPECIES
------------------lb/acre
--seeds/lb-seeds/sgft--
'✓Gr INTERMEDIATE WHEAT. 10 97000 22. 27
' PUBESCENT WHEAT. 10 90000 20 . 66
SMOOTH BROME 8 145000 26 . 63
ALFALFA, RANGER 1 210000 4 . 82
-------------------- -- -- -
' ---- 29 542000 74 . 38
The presence of the sawmill operation is fortuitous with
respect to creating a growth medium. Sawdust and wood chips are . +
usually produced in abundance. This will be used to add organic
matter to the gravels that remain in the slopes .
The spreading depth of the wood chips , shavings , and sawdust '
will not be greater than about 1 to 1 . 5 inches . To use mo:re would
probably result in excessive decomposition difficulties and
possible suffocation of young seedlings . This material , once Q
spread, will be mixed with the upper portions of the gravel by
running a dozer up and down the slope . The treads of the dozer
will help mix the woody material into the gravels and produce
furrows useful in revegetation.
Prior to mixing the woody material , fertilization of the slope
will occur. This is necessary because the decomposition processes
i
' 3
1
