-45-
• MR. MASSEY: Okay. The first witness I would like to introduce is Dr.
Sam Bamberg. Sam is an expert in soils and revegetation. I'd like -- Sam, if
you could describe your qualifications and address the issues that were raised
by Mr. Cohen concerning topsoil requirements and potential revegetation
success, given a Battle Mountain Permit Application.
MR. DANIELSON: Excuse me, Mr. Bamberg, were you sworn at the last
meeting?
MR. BAMBERG: Yes, I was. My name is Samuel Bamberg. I have a Ph .D in
plants and soils. I have done extensive work in mountain areas in the west.
I started working in the western United States, out of Grand Junction, in
1954. Am I speaking loud enough? Okay, I'll try to raise my voice. I'm not
a -- I worked in the inter-mountain west, specifically on plant, soil
substrate relationships for the past twenty-five years. My specific academic
work was in mountain areas in which I did plant, soil, substrate
• relationships, exactly the kind of thing that you need to do in corder to be
able to understand, get information and make recommendations on rreclamation
projects. I've worked on approximately 15 to 18 projects, including gold
mines, uranium mines, and copper mines in the western United States. I have a
broad background also in the substrate relationships of acid generation; how
to deal with that in reclamation projects. I've dealt specifically with
that. I've had hands-on experience in actual soil stripping, reclamation,
inter-reclamation on the large -- on large scale reclamation projects. I've
worked on the McClaughlin project in California. I've worked in both Utah and
in Colorado. I've done work anywhere from Summitville on down imto the
plains. I've also done work locally for reclamation revegetatiom on flood
plains. I've worked with Cooley Gravel, locally, so I have also background
locally here.
To address Mr. Cohen's specific problems and objections to the
reclamation we have put together, I would also like to say that the plan was
reviewed by the Mined Land Reclamation people, by Camille Farrell who we had
extensive discussions with and the recommendations that she made have been
• incorporated into the reclamation plan.
