-46-
• Now, on the question of how much topsoil you need or how much subsoil,
the Dillon Conference, specifically dealt with those problems in which you
have acid or toxic materials or actual problems with substrates in which you
have either toxic or acid generating. At that point, you need to isolate, as
he mentioned, the desolved solids coming up through it. This material in the
and zone that I specifically looked at down there; does not have the type of
substrate in which you need a layer of material which acts as a buffer between
the -- what would be acid material below and the plant growth medium. The
plant growth medium that I found on site specific soil Horizon profiles is
that both the A and portions of the Bare excellent topsoiling materials and
the Company will be stripping these and saving these down to a depth of six
feet if they are suitable. We have done tests that show these materials are
suitable as top dressing materials. The material underneath the subsoil, what
would be the subsoil, is inert rock and finds materials from the mine itself.
On the question of organic matter, the 3 to 20% is an eastern organic,
matter, typically the soils that I have tested out here run at the most.2%.
• Most of them in a fraction; .5 - .8% organic matter is typical for these
soils. The plant species we have set are adapted to these kinds of soil
conditions in the lower organic content so that in order to put 3 - 20%
organic content in these western soils would be difficult and it would be
counter-productive from the type of reclamation we are trying to do.
As concerns erosion, there will be grading and the reduction of slopes
and a -- the final grading and reclamation plans before you even start
applying soils will establish drainages and direct it to areas s~o that you
have the drainage re-established across these sites so that the erosion is at
a minimum and those areas that you do came in and plate with this top dressing
material and revegetate are stable at that point, and the timing and plants
that we will start will have a chance before there is much erosion to get - to
germinate, to get good growth, get roots down and act as the plants themselves
will over the first couple of years, will act as a stabalizer.
So far as the problems that I have seen in reclamation with acid
generation potential, again you need for the microbiological and microfloor
that he mentions. We need a much more humid environment, you need inoculation
