Major equipment at the mine is equipped with portable fire extin-
guishers. In addition, the water truck which is used to control the
dust at the mine site is also equipped to control any fires which
may occur. GEC Minerals, Inc. currently strives to maintain a neat,
clean work area which will not constitute a fire hazard. Any coal
waste which would potentially self-combust is immediately removed
and hauled to the backfill material for disposal.
Sealing of Exploration and Mine Holes. As previously covered in
this section, numerous abandoned underground mines exist within the
current mine area. Many of these openings will be mined through
under this proposed plan. GEC Minerals, Inc. plans to maximize
coal recovery by mining through several of these underground
operations. In any case, numerous holes, entries and other
evidence of abandoned mines will be found and treated appropriately
as described below.
• GEC Minerals,Inc. plans to manage bore holes, exploration holes,
blast holes and other openings within the permit area by filling
the hole or opening with cuttings or inert material. In addition,
holes which may flow as a result of possible artesian conditions
will be cemented to deter the flow of ground water from one
formation to another or to the surface. In the event that drill
holes are required to remainopen for use as a water supply well or
as a ground water monitoring well, it will be completed with casing
and piezometers at sufficient height above the land surface to
prevent drainage of surface water or or other foreign material to
enter the well. Caps will be utilized to prevent introduction of
objects other than monitoring and sampling equipment into these
wells. When these wells are no longer required, they will be
abandoned in a manner as described above.

2.05-31
