problem aeeas. Establishing partnerships for weed management within the local area is
essential for successful long-term weed management.
7) Noxious and pest weed infestations that threaten natural and reclaimed areas will be
controlled with acceptable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods. These methods aze
further discussed below.
2.3 INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT
The Edna Mine will implement an Integrated Pest Management ("IPM") approach for control of
noxious and pest weeds within the project area. An IPM approach enables selection of weed control
methods based on site specific environmental conditions and control needs. The Routt County weed
control coordinator will be consulted regarding weed management practices. The following weed
control methods will be considered for use:
I) Cultural- Planting acceptable aggressive plant species for site colonization and promoting
healthy vegetation communities in reclaimed aeeas. Planning activities and projects [o prevent
unnecessary disturbance.
2) Mechanical-Mowing, pulling, disking and plowing may be used on weedy species chat can be
controlled mechanically
3) Biological-Introduction of insects or other biologic agents that are known to inhibit or prevent
reproduction of noxious weed species. Biological controls will be coordinated with the
Colorado Department of Agriculture's Insectory in Grand Junction or other knowledgeable
agencies.
4) Chemical-Application of appropriate herbicides by a licensed applicator. All herbicides will
be applied in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and in accordance with
Colorado state laws.
Information about selected noxious weed species tazgeted by Routt county am contained in Appendix
D. Additionally, there are many other resources available regazding noxious weed control that may be
used to develop control strategies (i.e., county extension agents, the Colorado State Department of
Agriculture and Internet websites). After the permit area's list of weedy plant species has been
produced, additional resources will be consulted to determine best management practices for Edna
Mine. Tn some cases, only one control method may be warcanted, while in other cases a combination
P&M Edna Mine ( 02/24/06
