dismrbed and reclaimed areas be surveyed on an annual basis
2.2 PREVENTION
Noxious and pest weeds are spread through dispersal of seed and/or transport of plant propagules (i.e.
rhizomes, bulbs, roots and etc.). The most effective way to control noxious and pest weeds is to
prevent their introduction in the first place. A combination of methods and practices will be
employed by the Edna Mine to control the introduction of weed species and their regeneration within
the project area. Following the 2006 site assessment potential weed introduction sources and
dispersion mechanisms by will be identified for the permit area. Based on this assessment
appropriate methods and procedures will be implemented to minimize weedy plant species
introduction potential.
The following methods and practices may be employed, either singly or in combination, to prevent
the introduction of weeds into disturbed and reclaimed areas:
I) Thorough cleaning of equipment (including vehicles, and in some cases, footwear) will be
conducted before entering weed-free areas to prevent the introduction of seed and plant
propagules from other areas both on and off-site.
2} Seed mixtures used for reclamation or temporary site stabilization will be free of noxious
weeds.
3) Hay, straw, and/or other materials used for mulch or other purposes will be certified weed
free.
4) Periodic weed inventory will be conducted to identify any new weed infestations that may
have occurred. Any new infestations will be scheduled for immediate control before they
have a chance to become established and/or spread,
5) Immediately prior to disturbance, any new project sites will be inventoried for weed
infestations. If weeds are present on the site, care must be taken when moving soil from this
site, as soil contaminated with noxious weed material or seed can easily lead to an
introduction elsewhere.
6) Communication and coordination with any adjacent land holders whose property is infested
with noxious weeds that may threaten the mine site should be contacted and informed of such
P&M Edna Mine rJ 02/24/06
