Specifically, it lies approximately 6.5 miles southwest
of the town of Hayden in the Williams Fork Mountains. The Wi]liams.Fork Mountains are .
composed of cretaceous sandstones, shales and coal bed of the Wi]]iams Fork formation under
which lies the Lewis shale formation (Tweto ] 979). Surface sediments are adark-brown residua]
silty loam covered by a dense scrub oak and aspens in the treed azeas, thick sagebrush and
gasses in the meadows, and thick gasses along the drainages.
The project area, in general, slopes to the north and east with the area being drained by
both the Yampa River to the north and Williams Fork River to the south. Both of these rivers
drain to the west and eventually merge west of the Williams Fork Mountains. The area is
populated by large game animals such as deer and elk, as well as by rabbits, mountain lions,
various species of birds, and other animals.
