Introduction
Juniper Coal company proposes to dri1141 core holes using drilling devices anchored to
trucks. The holes will be between six and eight inches in diameter and extend below any
possible cultural levels. Of the 41 proposed core holes, 23 fall within aeeas previously
inventoried for cultural resources and were not re-inventoried for this project. The remaining ] 8
core holes cover nine sections within TSN R89W in the Williams Fork Mountains of northern
Colorado. It is northwest of Hayden Gulch Road, southwest of Hayden and is located entirely on
private land, Most core holes will be located along existing two-track roads. However, core
holes located in TSN R89W Section 36 would require improvement of an overgrown, existing
road so that the top of the ridge could be accessed. This construction would likely involve
removal of surface vegetation and blading.
The project area is 135 acres in size and includes eight isolated core holes and one survey
block of ] 19 acres that covers nine additional holes in sections 35 and 36 (Figures 1-3). One
isolated core hole, BLM06G, was covered as a ten acre block (Figure 2). At the l 19 acre block,
90 acres were inventoried; the remaining 29 were not, due to severity of slope (these unsurveyed
areas aze identified in Figure 3). A total of 1 Ob acres were surveyed by Sally Metcalf, Randall
Turner, and Rita Sulkosky, archaeologists of Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, in November
2005.
Table 1 Juni er coal core hole location and status
Core hole # Legal location Previous survey?
(Name/BLM number) 2005 survey type Figure
reference
BLM06A TSN R89W Section 27 No 100 fi radius Figure 2
BLM06AA TSN R89W Section 24 Hayden Gulch West Coa]
Mine Area/BLM #17-82 not surveyed Figure 3
BL1N06AB TSN R89W Section 24 Hayden Gulch West Coal
Mine AreaBLM #17-82 not surveyed Figure 3
BLMO6AC TSN R89W Section 23 Hayden Gulch West Coal
Mine Area/BLM #17-82 not surveyed Figure 3
BLMO~ TSN R89W Section 27 No ] 00 fi radius Figure 2
BLM06C TSN R89W Section 22 No 100 fi radius Figure 2
BLM06D TSN R89W Section 22 Hayden Gulch West Coal
Mine AreaBLM #] 7-82 not surveyed Figures 1, 2
BLMO6E TSN R89W Section 22 Hayden Gulch West Coal
Mine AreaBLM #17-82 not surveyed Figures 1, 2
BLM06F TSN R89W Section 2] No ] 00 fr radius Figure 2
