Each Settling Cell was sized to hold the sludge generated during the life of the mine and
still maintain at least one foot of water over the top of the sludge. Details of the pond
design are shown in Lyntek Drawings 07004A-C-11 (Map T-2) and 07004A-C-12 (Map
T-3).
•
I•
Each pond is atwo-compartment design with the "settling cell" being the repository of
the precipitated material "Sludge". The calculated life of mine sludge volume required is
508 CuFt of area. Both Settling Cells have a volume of 756 CuFt plus one foot of
freeboard. Both of the second cells (Polishing Cells) have a volume of 630 CuFt plus one
foot of freeboard. Design information for the Settling Cell and Polishing Cell are
presented in Tables 3.4 and 3.5 below.
Table 3.4 -Settling Cell Pond Sizing
Pond Over all Len th to 20 Ft.
Pond Over all Width t 20 Ft.
Slud a Celi Len th Bottom 8 Ft.
Slu a Celi Width Bottom 6 Ft.
Sludge Cell Depth 7 Ft.
Side slo s 45de tees
Free Board 1 Ft.
Table 3.5 -Polishing Cell Pond Sizing
Pond Over all Len tti to 20 Ft.
Pond Over all Width to 20 Ft.
Slud a Cell Len th Bottom 6 Ft.
Slud a Cell Width Bottom 6 Ft.
Sludge Cell Depth 0 Ft.
Side slo s 45degrees
Free Board 1 Ft.
The Settling Cell volume was checked to verify that there was adequate retention time to
promote settling. Based on bench scale tests of similar mine water effluent, most of the
settling occurred within 20 minutes without adding flocculent. Two hours of retention is
recommended, equivalent to 2,400 gallons or 320 CuFt of pond capacity at a 20 GPM
treatment rate. The designed settling cell has more than twice this capacity (Table 3.6).
Table 3.6 -Settling Cell Retention
Retention time in F~ch Settling Cell
756 Cu ft Available Volume or,
5654.8 Gallons or,
282.744 minutes or,
4.7 Hours of Total Retention Tlme
9
