walls, not shielded from them. The crashing and smashing will reverberate
throughout the Canyon.
Heavy truck traffic down Ward Creek Road and up Slaughter Grade (5 to 30
or more trucks per day) with Jake brake use throughout the area on down
grades will cause further disturbances. The canyon topography dictates that
most homes are located in the valley floor close to the road. Ward Creek Road
is also a school bus route with morning and afternoon pick ups and drop offs.
Many children board the bus as it makes frequent stops on Ward Creek Road.
The road is also used for walldng/jogging and horseback riding.
The mine area will be scared permanently by the rock trmoval and dust
clouds which will be visible for miles from the town of Cedaredge and our
National Scenic Byway, Highway 65.
Currently all domestic water provided by Coalby Domestic Water Company is
under a "Water Boil Order" from the Colorado Department of Health. Final
testing of Coalby's new water filtration system has not yet been completed.
Many homeowners including myself have drilled wells to insure sufficient
domestic water for our homes as Coalby Water has struggled over the last few
years to meet regulatory requirements for water quality. Now Benson
Brothers is proposing extraction of groundwater at a rate of 120,000 gallons
per month, or equivalent average usage of 10 households (this information
was not included in their application). This will significantly limit the
availability of ground water for Coalby Canyon homeowners.
The proposed gravel pit will destroy the quality of life for Coalby residents,
and reduce property values throughout the area. We have invested our life's
savings in our beautiful log home within less than half a mile from the open
pit, min,ng operation. Approval of this operation would destroy the saleability
of our property and reduce its market value by 50 per cent or more. Will you
be willing to cut our property taxes by halt?
The increased residential use of property in. Coalby Canyon, along with new
residential subdivision proposals, is not compatible with the proposed Red Canyon
mio+*+g project. Our community will work together to atop this ,n;ning project. How
would you feel if you were a resident of Coalby Canyon? Please reject proposal
SD05-001 to save this azea from twenty years of excessive noise, dust, traffic, property
devaluation, and potential loss of domestic water. If you have any questions please
do not hesitate to contact me or my wife Patty at 856-8668, or
roberthbollinget@aol. com.
Best Regards,/' ~~~7~ •~ ~ y~~
Robert H.
