Box 3609
Grand Junction, CO 81502
Paul,
Please find attached the information I believe you wanC for permitting the
gravel pit near Parachute, Colorado.
I am including a soils map, soils description for the site, and the complete
soil survey for the Rifle Soil Survey area which covers the area in question.
Also included is a seeding sheet and information that you can use in the
revegetation process.
Well planned reclamation of the area will allow for less movement of material
and proper placement of material while excavating, stockpiling, and replacement
will al.l result in reduced costs.
Disturbed areas will need shaping of topsoils, seedbed preparation, seeding
mulching, weed control and reapplication of any of the steps that have failed
for whatever reason.
Shaping: The area to be reclaimed needs to have slopes that are as flat
l as possible with 3:1 (H:V) being the steepest. Other things
to consider in shaping include drainage patterns, drainage
area, needed conservation practices such as terraces or
I diversions if needed, slope aspect, and soil factors and
conditions.
I Top Soil: For vegetation to become established suitable plant growth
medium must be provided, generally the use of stockpiled
top soil is the source of this medium. All top soil in
I the area should be salvaged during the mining process. The
top soil stock pile may need to be seeded to a grass species
if it will be more than a few months before the top soil
is reapplied to the area. A minimum of 6 inches of top soil
is needed on all areas to be reseeded and in some cases,
12 - 18 inches or more will be required depending on
reclamation regulations, soil and climate conditions. In
I some situations, top soil may be required to be placed
back in proper soil horizon layers. Reclamation permit
agencies will let applicants know when this is required.
O Tfte Soil Conservation Sernce
U is an agency of the 2 ( a )
Department of Agric ull ure
