Typically, the surface horizon is not as fine as that of the typic pedon having
about 4 inches of loam followed by about 10 inches of a silty clay loam. In this
•
mapping unit the argillic horizon occurs at about 14 inches. Cracking and carbonate
accumulation occur much like that described for the series.
Presently, some portions of this soil are used for dryland wheat, oats and barley
production, while those found on steep upland slopes and above draws are used for
rangeland.
Permeability is moderately slow to moderate. Erosion is a hazard if the soil is
left without adequate vegetative cover. The depth to ground water is greater than
5 feet. Effective rooting depth is about 30 inches. Stoniness class is 2.
Land capability class is Vle.
MAP UNIT BiD: BINCO SILTY LOAM, 15 TO 30 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep, well-drained, and fine textured soil is found on strongly sloping to
moderately steep toe-slopes and side-slopes of ridges and draws. This soil occurs in
weathered material from Lewis shale. This mapping unit occurs on toe-slopes north
of Middle Creek, southwest I/q southwest I/q Section 13, T.SN R.86W, at 6,700 to
~r 7,100 feet elevation.
Typically, this mapping unit differs from the series description by having a
gravelly silty clay loam surface horizon of about 7 inches overlying a heavy argillic.
The subsoil is a grayish brown silty clay and extends to depths greater than 36 inches.
Included in this mapping unit are small areas of Aaberg silty clay. Inclusions
make up about 10 percent of the map unit.
Presently this soil is used exclusively for rangeland. Due to the steepness of
grade, vegetation is sparce, productivity low, and barren areas are frequent.
Artemisia tridentata big sage and grasses are dominant.
Permeability is moderately slow to moderate. Erosion is high; many areas of
steeper slopes hove eroded and are barren. Depth to ground water is greater than
5 feet. Effective rooting depth is about 40 inches. Stoniness class is 3.
Land capability unit is Vlle.
MAP UNIT BuB: BUCKSKIN LOAM, 2 TO 8 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep, well-drained, and fine textured soil occurs on gently to moderately
sloping ridges and mid-slopes. This soil is formed in alluvium and residuum derived
2.3-3
