from shale and siltstones. This mapping unit occurs in Section 10, T.SN R.86W at
• 6,700 to 6,800 feet elevations.
Typically, the surface horizon is a grayish brown heavy loam or clay loam obout
4 to 7 inches deep. The upper portion of the subsoil is a dark grayish brown clay
loam underlain by an argillic horizon at about 20 inches. This horizon is a light
yellowish brown clay extending to depths greater thon 60 inches.
Presently the soil is used for dryland wheat, livestock grazing and wildlife
habitat. The vegetation consists of Quercus gambellii gombel oak, Artemisia
tridentata big sage, and Amelonchier ssp. serviceberry.
Permeability is very low. Water erosion hazard is moderate. Effective rooting
depth depends on the depth of the argillic horizon, which ranges from 25 to 40
inches. Depth to ground water is greater than 5 feet. Stoniness class is 0.
Land capability unit is Vle.
MAP UNIT BuC: BUCKSKIN LOAM, 8 TO 15 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep, well-drained, fine textured soil occurs on moderately to strongly
sloping mid-slopes, ridge crests, and side slopes of ridges. This soil is formed in
• mixed alluvium and residuum derived from shales and siltstones. This mapping unit
occurs in Section 10, T.SN R.86W and Section 31, T.SN R.85W at 6,600 to 7,200 feet
elevation.
Typically, the surface horizon is dark grayish brown silty clay loam about 6
inches deep. The argillic horizon is dark grayish brown to brown silty clay loam and
clay which extends to about 40 inches. The substratum consists of a strong brown
clay which impedes rooting depth. This horizon overlies siltstone at about 52 inches.
Presently this soil is used for extensive dryland wheat production along Fish
Creek, livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. In the uncultivated areas, vegetation
consists of Artemisia tridentata big sage and Chrysothamnus ssp. rabbitbrush.
Permeability is very slow. Water erosion hazard is moderate. Effective rooting
depth depends on the depth of the argillic horizon which ranges from 25 to 40 inches.
Depth to ground water is greater than S feet. Stoniness class is 0.
Land capability unit is Vle.
MAP UNIT BuD: BUCKSKIN LOAM, I S TO 30 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep, well-drained, fine textured soil occurs on strongly sloping to
2.3-4
