occurs throughout the Moffat Area in Sections 19, 30, 31, T5N R.85W at 6,800 to
• 7,800 feet elevation.Typically, the surface layer is a brown sandy loam ranging in
depths of 4-12 inches. There is an underlying horizon of dark brown fine sandy clay
loam overlying fractured sandstone at about 17 inches.
Presently this soil is used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Vegetation
of Artemisia iridentata big sage and avercus a9 mbelii gambel oak predominate.
Permeability is moderately rapid. Water erosion hazard is moderate. Depth to
ground water is greater than 5 feet. Effective rooting depth is about 17 inches.
Stoniness class is 3.
Land capability unit is Vlle.
MAP UNIT SpC-RL: SPLITRO-ROCKLAND, 8 TO I S PERCENT SLOPE
This shallow, well to somewhat excessively well-drained loamy soil forms in
sandstone residuum and rock outcrops. This mapping unit occurs on moderately to
strongly sloping ridges in Sections I I and 14, T.SN R.86W and west I/q Section 8 and
32, T.SN R.85W at 6,600 to 8,000 feet elevation.
Typically, the surface horizon is a brown sandy loam ranging from 7 to 18 inches
• deep. This map unit is mixed with areas of rockland, sandstone ledges, and
Cryorthents similar to Merino cobbly loam. Inclusions make up about 25 percent of
this mapping unit.
Merino cobbly loam has a lithic contact 7 to 9 inches below the surface. The
surface horizon is yellowish brown sand about 3 inches thick. The underlying
material is a light yellowish brown coarse sand, calcareous, over fractured sandstone
(see pedon description 05-04-08-080).
This mapping unit is extensive on the east facing slopes. It occurs east of
Skyline drive and on the long narrow ridges in Sections l I and 13.
Presently this soil is used for wildlife habitat and sheep grazing at the lower
elevations. Dominant vegetation is Quercus gambellii gambel oak and Sym-
phoricarpos s~ snowberry. Portions of this mapping unit in Fish Creek on moderate
slopes have been cultivated for dryland wheat production.
Permeability is moderately rapid. Water erosion hazard is moderate. Depth to
ground water is greater than 5 feet. Effective rooting depth is about 17 inches.
Stoniness class is 4.
• Land capability unit is VIII.
2.3-IS
