aeolian origin about 8 to 10 inches thick. A cobbly loam occurs at about 20 inches
• overlying a very gravelly loamy sand which extends to about 5 feet.
Presently this soil is used for cultivated dryland wheat production, rangeland and
grazing. Vegetation is Artemisia tridentate big sage.
Permeability is rapid. Wind erodibility is high withouT sufficient ground cover.
Depth to ground water is greater than 5 feet. Effective rooting depth is less than
25 inches. Stoniness class is 0.
Land capability unit is Vlle.
MAP UNIT HaD: HANDRAN STONY LOAM, IS TO 30 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep to very deep, well-drained, loamy soil formed in old alluvial gravels
on terraces and steep escarpments. The loamy soil overlies sandstone with cobbles
at about 2 feet. This mapping unit occurs on the steeper slopes west of Trout Creek,
east I/4 Section 25 and 36, T.SN R.86W at 6,800 to 7,200 feet elevation.
The soil profile representative of this mapping unit is similar to the Handran
series description (pedan/i 05-03-10-034) except that below 30 inches, a horizon of
• varied colored sands and gravels occurs overlying standing water. Included in this
mapping unit are small areas of rock outcrops on the steeper parts of the slopes.
Inclusions make up 10 percent of the mapping unit.
Presently this soil supports vegetation mainly used for livestock grazing,
rangeland and wildlife habitat. Vegetation consists mainly of Artemisia tridentate
big sage; it is less productive near rockier areas.
Permeability is rapid. Ground water is ~at about 5 feet. Erosion hazard is high
from wind, moderate from water. Stoniness class is 3. Effective rooting depth is
about 25 inches.
The land capability unit is Vlle due to the slope and stoniness.
MAP UNIT HaF: HANDRAN STONY LOAM, GREATER THAN 65
PERCENT SLOPE
This deep to very deep, well-drained, loamy soil is formed in old alluvial gravels
on very steep to extremely steep terraces and escarpments. The loamy soils overlie
cobbles at about 2 feet. This mapping unit occurs in east I/q Sections 25 and 36,
• T.SN R.85W, west of Trout Creek at 6,800 to 7,000 feet elevation.
The soil profile in this mapping unit does not vary significantly from the series
2.3-10
